Thanksgiving Weekend

The Colts celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday weekend by picking up 2 wins to get themselves back on track and return to 1st place in the NSJHL Fred Fox Division.

The Colts started the weekend with an overtime win against the Pictou County Scotians in a game which saw 15 goals and 82 shots on goal between the two teams. Co-Captain Josh Rector led the way with 6 assists, while the Colts received goals from 8 different players. Alexander Arab (1G), Chris Densmore (1G, 1A), Tristan Giasson (1G, 1A), and Brett Dempsey (1G) picked up their first goals of the season. Jacob Tibert (1G, 1A), Brett Armstrong (1G, 1A) and Jeffrey Withers (1G) also found the back of the net, while Kyle Pinksen (1G, 1A) picked up the OT winner. Jordan Sollows (2A ), and Nick Fairbairn (1A) rounded out the scoring.

The holiday weekend finished with an intense divisional match-up on the road against the Sackville Blazers. Sackville Arena has always been one of the most challenging environments for road teams to pick up points. Monday night was no exception as the Blazers, perennial contenders in the Fred Fox division, jumped out to an early lead. Fans in attendance looking for a fast paced and intense divisional match-up were not disappointed as the teams exchanged scoring chances all night. Great goaltending at both ends however, kept the score at 1-0 through two periods. The Colts were finally able to break through in the 3rd as Kyle Pinksen (1G, 1A) fired a wrist shot from the slot to break the shutout, before Connor Macleod (1G) gave the Colts the lead with 6 minutes to go. Brett Armstrong (1A), and Brett Dempsey (1A) added assists while Jonny Prall stopped 32 of 33 shots faced to give the Colts their 5th win of the season, and sole possession of 1st place in the Fred Fox Division.

Friday, October 14 vs Valley Maple Leafs

Friday night saw the Colts host the defending NSJHL and Atlantic Canadian Champion Valley Maple Leafs in a rematch of last season’s first round playoff matchup. The game went back and forth before the playoff tested Maple Leafs went ahead 2-0 part way through the first period. Rookie Kyle Pinksen (2G, 1A) got the Colts on the score sheet with just under 4 minutes left in the 1st. The Maple Leafs would regain their two goal lead early in the 2nd period before Jonny Prall shut the door, allowing the Colts to mount a comeback. Co-Captain Josh Rector (1G, 1A) brought the Colts within one before Pinksen added his second of the night to tie the score at 3-3. Cole Harbour native Jacob Tibert (3G, 3A) then found the score sheet as he connected with fellow Auburn High School AlumniNick Monk (1A) to give the Colts a 4-3 lead late in the 2nd period. Tibert would add two more goals in the 3rd period, while Nick Fairbairn (1A) andTristan Giasson (1A) added assists to give the Colts a 6-3 victory.

Saturday, October 15 vs Cumberland County Blues

Saturday night saw the Colts take on the Cumberland County Blues who handed the Colts their 2nd loss of the season back in late September. Looking to keep momentum rolling and with a number of veteran players out of the lineup, the team’s young core would be put to the test. Another slow start saw things deadlocked at 0-0 for most of the first period before the Blues went ahead 1-0. The Colts would tie it up just before intermission on a Nick Collins (1G) shot from the point. The Blues regained a one goal lead in the 2nd, but that would be the last Blues shot to get past Jonathan Prall. Jacob Tibert (1G) would tie things up early in the third before Josh Rector (1G, 1A) would give the Colts the lead. Another Auburn High School Alumni, Jordan Sollows (1G), would add an insurance marker to put the Colts up 4-2 as they went on to win their 4th straight. Jake Rector, Nic Lucuratolo, Nick Monk, Aaron Parks, Kyle Pinksen and Brett Armstrong would add individual assists as the Colts picked up 7th victory of the season in 9 games.
